Flowers Under Water

Recently a florist was asked to do wedding table centerpieces in a tall glass vase and the bride wanted a single calla lily under water with the base of the stem touching the bottom of the vase. With the calla totally submerged under water, the question was how to prevent the calla from floating to the top of the vase.

Florist #1: Take the smallest brass pin frog and use Cling (adhesive floral clay) to fasten the pin to the bottom of the glass. Be sure to clean the glass with straight vinegar first and make sure it is very dry before you attempt to fasten the pin. Next, push the flower stem(s) down onto the frog. Put clear glass stones around the pin frog and up the stems a half inch or so to cover the mechanics. Add just a little bit of water before you put it in your floral cooler. Add the rest of the water on site using a funnel with an attached hose to avoid splashing the table linens.
